Brief History

Topspin Table Tennis Academy was started in 2005.  Initially, the venue was in Madipakkam and subsequently shifted to the present spacious venue at Purasawalkam in 2008.

Reason for starting Topspin Table Tennis Academy

Topspin Table Tennis Academy is brain child of Mr. Shanker. The creation of the table tennis academy goes like this. He was compelled to learn table tennis by his parents at the age of 10 years. He was recognized by Central Bank of India Staff Sports and Recreation club as a player and was captain of the Bank’s team for 15 years. This made him to develop passion towards the game and was motivated to start a Table Tennis Academy and take up table tennis as his profession.

Facilities:

  • There are 8 Stag Table Tennis Tables.
  • No coaching for elders.
  • There are 2 qualified coaches.
  • Flexible timings. Though coaching is only in the evenings between 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Academy will be open for all members morning 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. and evening 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
  • Spacious hall with good ventilation
  • Ample car parking space.
  • Membership permitted for both children and elders.
  • Saturday Tournament on league basis with entry fee of Rs.50 per player.
  • Nominal entry fee of Rs.50/- per person for the Saturday Tournament and the entire fee collected will be distributed by way of gift vouchers from pre-quarters.
  • Tournament will be conducted on league basis.
  • Tournament starts Saturday evening by 7 p.m. and would be over by 10:30 p.m.
  • Maximum 48 players can participate in the Tournament.
  • Monthly ranking system has also been recently implemented for Saturday Tournament.

Reasons for success of Topspin Table Tennis Academy:

  • Efforts of Mr. Hari and Mr. Boopathi, brothers of Mr.Shanker in stabilizing and developing the academy are immeasurable.
  • Jaiwanth, son of Mr. Shanker has always been a driving force in development of the academy. Even the name of Academy “TOPSPIN” was suggested by him.
  • Coaches Mr. P.V.Ramakrishnan, national veteran player and Mr. A.Devaraj, former state player have been playing key role in molding the students in achieving laurels in various competitions at interschool, district, and state level.
  • Recently, Mr. V.S. Balaji (Corporate and District player) and Mr. VHR Siva ITTF-PTT Level I coach have been added to the coaching team to improve on the level of coaching.
  • The strength of the academy is its members. The age of members of academy varies from 6 to 60 with differences in religion, language, culture, status etc., but differences have never been a hindrance in uniting all members together. We function as one unit or one family; “The Topspin Family.”  At present there are 60 members; 20 children and 40 elders.
  • The academy’s visiting card is affiliation to Madras District Table Tennis Association, which helps in the reputation of the academy.
  • Owners, Coaches, and players of various academies in Chennai have been of great support and encouragement to the academy.
  • Media has been of great support in promoting table tennis in publishing various events and results performed by our academy from time to time.
  • Just dial services have been an important reason for enrolling new members and to reach players of various parts of the city.
  • Saturday Tournament is another unique event of our Academy.  Though it is internal tournament by name, players from all academies participate in the tournament.  Even if a player is not a member of our Academy, he is still eligible to participate in the Saturday Tournament provided he is referred by any member of our Academy.
